The Post Office requires folded self-mailers to be sealed in some fashion in order to claim bulk mail discounts. The most common method of doing so is to use wafer seals, often referred to as tabs.

Accurate Mailing will provide and apply the tabs to your mail piece as required.  Most single sheet, folded mailers will require one or two tabs. Designing your folded piece to require only one tab can increase the ‘open’ rate and reduce your processing costs. The guide below illustrates the relationship between folding and the number of required tabs.

Special rules apply to any mail piece that has bound pages or uses staples to stitch the pages together.

Folding & Tabbing

When designing your mail piece, position the panel that will be addressed with the fold on the bottom, under the addressing area. This will only require one tab to qualify for bulk mail rates. If the fold is above the addressing area, two tabs will be required, thus increasing costs.
